Meeting the demand
Thrushwood Farms Quality Meats Inc., a Galesburg family business entering its 33rd year, is exploring options to expand its operations and revamping its website. Later this month, the Hankes family will begin crafting a long-range plan that may involve working with more retail stores and offering more private labeling service for its meat products. Thrushwood Farms also includes a retail store and offers custom butchery for local farmers and wholesale meats for restaurants and fundraising groups.

The event has grown since its debut in 1987. This year’s Taste featured 24 different food vendors as well as the Bud Light Build-A-Bar sponsored by G&M Distributors.
An opinion echoed over and over again by vendors and community members was

John R. Pulliam: Business owners optimistic on local economy
"Down to Business; -- The Dow Jones passed the 10,000 mark last week. Economists say the recession is over, although — factoring in those people so discouraged they no longer are looking for work — about 15 percent of working-age Americans may want to debate that assessment.

Meat processor re-tooling for efficiency
There is a theory among some that Galesburg’s retail businesses seem to be coming back from the recession faster than some areas because the city has been in its own economic downturn since 2004. If Thrushwood Farms is any indication, there may be something to that.
